Dear Colleague
Apologies if you have already received this but as President of the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) I would like to ensure you have received the invite aimed at MCN Chairs, Commissioners or their suitable deputies to a Study Day focussing on the Provision of Oral Surgery in Primary Care.
BAOS feel that OS services in Primary care are hugely varied across England and Wales. There is no standardised system for Tier 2/DES accreditation, no ability to transfer a Tier 2/DES accreditation across health board boundaries, no standardised Primary Care Contracts and no standardised approach to incorporating Oral Surgery training within Primary Care Services.
As we are aware, the NHS (England)10-year health plan aims to create a sustainable, modern health service that meets the evolving needs of England’s population. Drawing on Lord Darzi’s independent review of the NHS the plan seeks to address critical NHS challenges. The government has launched a consultation on the plan, inviting stakeholders to co-develop the future health service.
The plan focuses on three major shifts:
- Moving care from hospitals to communities to provide more services locally
- Improving technology use in health and care to streamline processes and enhance patient experiences
- Emphasising prevention over treatment to identify illnesses earlier and address root causes
In line with the first major shift, Oral Surgery has undoubtedly been ahead of the curve, in moving Tier 2 Oral Surgery Services into Primary Care. However, BAOS are concerned that without a standardised approach to Oral Surgery Services in Primary Care, there is a risk that some areas will be unable to deliver as robust a service as others. This may lead to a deterioration in quality of service provision and a breakdown in OS Primary Care contracts. BAOS feels this study day is an opportunity to discuss the different systems being used in areas and to share best practice. It is also an opportunity to have MCN Chairs, members of the commissioning teams and Primary Care Oral Surgeons together for discussions and to foster better relationships across these sectors.
The Study Day is planned for Friday 5th September 2025 at the Malmaison Hotel, Manchester and we would be delighted if you could attend as our guest for the day. If you are unable to attend but are able to nominate a suitable deputy to attend in your stead, please provide their contact details.
