Wellington, Somerset, has marked a significant moment in local healthcare with the official launch of a new dental surgery, which is the first NHS practice to open in the county in a decade.
Wellington Dental Care, operated by Dentistry For You, has commenced operations on the Lowmoor Industrial Estate in Tonedale, aiming to alleviate the severe access issues facing residents in need of National Health Service dental treatment.
The opening is a central pillar of NHS Somerset’s strategy to strengthen dental provision across the region. However, the initial response has underscored the depth of the local healthcare crisis. The practice received nearly 4,000 patient registrations almost immediately, forcing the practice to temporarily suspend new applications as they work through the initial cohort.
The clinic offers a blend of both NHS and private appointments. Nadeem Harunani, admin director for Dentistry For You, confirmed that 400 patients have already been contacted for appointments and stressed that while the focus is on NHS care, certain cosmetic procedures would not fall under the national scheme.
The overwhelming local need was highlighted by one of the first patients, Heather Bubb from West Buckland. She shared her relief at securing an NHS appointment after rising costs made private dental care unaffordable, stating that she was grateful she and her husband could now access the necessary treatment locally.
While acknowledging that one facility cannot fully resolve Somerset’s substantial demand, Sukeina Kassam, Director of Primary Care at NHS Somerset, celebrated the opening as a vital stride forward. She confirmed the authority is introducing several initiatives to expand NHS dentistry. There are also two additional practices set to open in Chard and Crewkerne, with dates to be confirmed soon.
