Support for members

We support members through timely guidance and coordinated responses to policy changes, contractual issues, and service redesign proposals. Our advocacy is both reactive, responding to urgent threats to provision or unfair policies, and proactive, promoting positive change such as integrated care pathways, prevention‑focused commissioning, and more flexible models of delivery. Through constructive engagement with NHS bodies, local authorities, and professional networks, Somerset LDC strives to protect the interests of independent practitioners while also advancing system‑wide improvements.

Champion initiatives

Promoting equitable access to dental care is central to our work. We champion initiatives that reduce barriers for vulnerable groups, rural communities, and those experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage. This includes promoting outreach programmes, supporting community dental services, and influencing commissioning priorities so that resources are targeted where need is greatest. Our aim is to help create a system in which every resident of Somerset can access appropriate, timely dental care without undue difficulty.

Professional development

Education and information form another pillar of our advocacy. We provide members with up‑to‑date briefings, training opportunities, and toolkits to help them adapt to policy changes, implement best practices, and improve patient outcomes. By fostering a culture of continuous professional development and sharing examples of successful local innovations, Somerset LDC helps practices operate more effectively and responsibly within an evolving regulatory and financial landscape.

Building trust

Building public trust in dentistry is a further objective. We engage with local media, health campaigns, and community partners to raise awareness of oral health prevention, the role of primary dental care, and how to navigate local services. Clear, consistent communication ensures that patients understand their options and know when and how to seek care, which in turn supports earlier intervention and better long‑term oral health across the county.

Finally, Somerset LDC knows advocacy works best when it is collaborative. We actively seek input from members, patients, and partner organisations to inform our priorities and to present united, evidence‑backed positions. By combining local insight with strategic influence, we aim to secure sustainable, high‑quality dental services that meet the needs of both practitioners and the communities they serve.
